jekyll logo

I’ve had loads of issues with my Wordpress site, specifically the memory being completely used up after a couple of days and linux randomly killing either apache or mysql or both, so I’ve decided to completely switch over to Jekyll and run it as a static site instead. It’s taken me a little while to convert everything over, but it went pretty well. Luckily I don’t really have a huge amount of content. I’ve just gone with the basic theme for now, but I might snazz it up a bit at some point. I think I’ve made posting relatively frictionless, although it’s really not as easy as just logging into wordpress and typing stuff into the rich text editor. Still, not too bad. All I have to do is make a new text file, save it, commit to git, push to my server, ssh into the server, and run a build script and bam it’s posted! hah. I could probably simplify the posting part a bit more if I script that as well, but I guess it depends on how much of a burden it is. It really only takes a minute to go from saving the post on my PC to getting it up on the server, so pretty painless.

I’ve also decided to ditch the vps.elrobbo.com domain in favour of just elrobbo.com/blog and permanent-redirected the old domain over. So now I can use elrobbo.com to host the blog, and potentially other things in the future.

I haven’t added in a commenting system yet, but I suppose it’s pretty easy to hook in either disqus or facebook or something like that, so in the future that may happen. Not sure. My wordpress blog got a few thousand comments, but every single one was spam so none were every published. FB and disqus make that a lot simpler to manage, I imagine. If I ever get an audience then I’ll do it for sure! You can email me if you want to say something and I guess I could manually post comments as part of the post itself :)

First post for almost 10 months! That’s what a server crashing all the time will do… not to mention having a baby. Here’s to static html!
